On January 3, 2001, the undefeated Sooners met the heavily favored Seminoles of Florida State in Miami, Florida for the FedEx Orange Bowl and the National Championship. Both Oklahoma and Florida State brought high-scoring offenses into the game, but it was the smothering defense of the Sooners that was the difference in the game.

The memory of that defeat drove the Seminoles to a perfect season in 1999 and a match-up with feisty Virginia Tech in the 2000 Nokia Sugar bowl for the National Championship. The Hokies, with gifted red-shirted freshman quarterback Mike Vick, had the Seminoles down early, but the explosive Florida State offense led a stirring comeback to defeat Virginia Tech 46-29.
